ABOUT US
Salford is a great place to live and work, for everyone
In the last decade Salford has been on a remarkable journey to emerge as a modern global city, attracting record public and private investment and becoming an engine for growth in Greater Manchester.
The council’s vision is 'Building a fairer, greener, healthier and more inclusive Salford for all.'
As the western gateway to the city region, Salford has some of the best strategic growth locations in Greater Manchester including MediaCityUK, City Centre Salford, and Airport City. The city is well placed to exploit future growth opportunities and deliver continued regeneration for the benefit of its diverse communities.
To help us achieve this vision we identified seven key priorities for the city to tackle the problems people in Salford are currently facing.
These priorities provide the focus of the council’s work over the next four years and are outlined in our corporate plan, This is our Salford, launched in July 2024.
This approach involves us working in a different way, being more open when we can about what we do, getting people involved, listening to their concerns and getting things done.
There is already much to celebrate as a city more well-paid jobs, new affordable and social homes, thriving local schools, award-winning green spaces, iconic infrastructure, cleaner transport, more integrated health and care and a vibrant cultural scene.
This plan aims to build on past successes and continue to find new and innovative ways to improve residents’ lives.
Housing and Community
A Good Home for All
At the heart of Salford's vision is the commitment to ensuring everyone has access to a decent and affordable place to call home. Recognising the ongoing challenges, the council is dedicated to significantly increasing the supply of high-quality, affordable, and low-carbon homes. Over the next four years, key priorities include:
Support for Vulnerable Residents: Collaborating with private landlords and tenants to minimise the risk of homelessness through timely support. (salford.gov.uk)
Improving Housing Standards: Driving up housing standards in the private rented sector as part of Greater Manchester’s Good Landlord Charter. (salford.gov.uk)
Bringing Empty Properties Back into Use: Utilising new powers to charge up to a 100% premium on council tax to bring more long-term empty properties back into use.(salford.gov.uk)
Sustainable Development: Ensuring new housing and commercial developments meet net-zero standards, while working with partners to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes through retrofitting. (salford.gov.uk)
Collaboration with Housing Providers: Partnering with local housing providers to ramp up the delivery of quality homes.(news.salford.gov.uk)
Optimising Council-Owned Land: Exploring ways to make better use of council-owned land to build more social and mixed-tenure housing. (salford.gov.uk)
Strategic Partnerships: Working closely with Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to forge one of the most ambitious strategic regeneration housing partnerships in the UK. (salford.gov.uk)
Integrated Housing Services: Developing a single integrated housing function within the council to deliver better housing services for residents and improve the ability to build new houses. (salford.gov.uk)
As the new Director of Housing, you will play a pivotal role in leading these initiatives, ensuring that Salford continues to grow as a city that prioritises the needs of its residents and builds a future that is fair, sustainable, and inclusive for all.
